For fastjet Zimbabwe cabin crew member Kelly Munjeri, the Harare–Johannesburg route has become a familiar part of life in the skies. What began as a regular duty rotation has, over time, turned into a connection with a city she now knows through early-morning arrivals, quick turnarounds, weekend stopovers, and the constant rhythm of travel.
For Kelly, the route has evolved into something comfortably familiar, yet Johannesburg continues to surprise her with its energy, pace and ever-changing experiences.
As cabin crew, Johannesburg is often experienced at speed, a smooth arrival, passengers disembarking, baggage offloaded, the aircraft prepared for departure, and before long, we are back in the air again. It is a rhythm that becomes second nature, fast-paced, efficient and unmistakably fastjet. But every so often, I get the chance to experience the city differently, not in uniform, not between flight duties, but simply as a traveller taking it all in.
THE TAKE OFF
Here is a tip from someone who is always in the air:Book your fastjet flight in advance to secure the lowest fares. It is a simple trick, but it makes a real difference.
My friend Sheila has mastered it. She even books months ahead, especially for major shopping weekends like Black Friday.
With multiple daily flights between Harare and Johannesburg, you have flexibility on your side. Personally, I love the 08:00 departure out of Harare. It gets you into Johannesburg just in time for a relaxed breakfast, which is arguably the best way to start any getaway.
TOUCHDOWN IN JOHANNESBURG
Johannesburg has a way of pulling you into its rhythm almost immediately. It is busy, energetic, stylish and constantly moving, yet it still leaves enough room for a good breakfast, a slow coffee and a weekend plan that unfolds at your own pace.
For a weekend traveller, that is part of the appeal. You can land in the morning and still have the whole day ahead of you.
A quick check in, a change of shoes, a message to friends, and suddenly the city is yours.
WHERE I DROP MY BAGS
Johannesburg caters to every type of traveller. Some visitors stay with family, others prefer the comfort of a hotel, while many weekend travellers enjoy the ease and flexibility of a stylish Airbnb.
My personal preference is an Airbnb close to my favourite shopping spots. After an early morning flight, I like knowing I can ease into the weekend, shop at my own pace, and have my accommodation just a short drive away.
MY JOHANNESBURG WEEKEND LIST
Johannesburg is a city that never runs out of things to do. Whether it is exploring the Museum of Illusions in Rosebank, enjoying the thrills of Gold Reef City, catching a local football match, or experiencing the energy of a township shisanyama, there is always something happening.
And then there is the nightlife, vibrant, stylish and unforgettable. After a full day of shopping, my friends and I usually plan an evening out. A favourite ritual includes dinner at Solo Restaurant, followed by mocktails at one of Sandton’s trendy spots.
I have always had a love for history, so I make it a point to include a cultural stop on my trips. Places like Vilakazi Street in Soweto and the Union Buildings offer powerful insights into South Africa’s past, adding depth and meaning to what might otherwise be a purely leisure weekend.
KELLY’S FOOD RUN
If there is one thing Johannesburg does not lack, it is variety. From fine dining to street style favourites, there is something for every craving.
I have tried more than once to finish a full kota, the beloved township sandwich, but I always surrender halfway through. It is rich, filling and absolutely worth the attempt.
Beyond that, Johannesburg is a culinary playground. Whatever you are in the mood for, you will find it, and chances are, it will be good.
Since joining fastjet, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve flown between Harare and Johannesburg,
she says with a laugh.
The last time I tried keeping track, I was already on 46 flights, and that was two years ago.

BEFORE YOU FLY
Book your fastjet flights well in advance for the lowest fares.
Johannesburg’s road network is extensive, so if you are unfamiliar with the city, I recommend using a hotel shuttle or
e-hailing service.
The local currency is the South African Rand. While cards are widely accepted, it is useful to carry a small amount of cash.
Do not hesitate to ask for help. Locals are generally friendly and willing to assist.
LAST CALL
Johannesburg is one of Africa’s leading metropolitan cities, dynamic, energetic and full of opportunity. Yet beneath its fast-paced exterior lies warmth and character that draw you in and keep you coming back.
If you ever ask me where to go for the perfect weekend escape on the fastjet route network, my answer will always be the same: Johannesburg.
Maybe next time, I will be on that flight with you. So go on, say yes to weekends in Johannesburg.
See you on board.
